[Wendell asks about making icode into standalone executables.] Current versions of Unicon offer a -B option to bundle an iconx onto the front of the generated icode for a standalone executable. This is the default on Windows but so far not on UNIX, it works on every platform I've seen but I don't know that it works Everywhere. I infer from Wendell's message that this feature isn't documented anywhere.
The "standalone executable" may still depend on certain shared libraries (.dll's on Windows) unless you linked iconx statically, so for more portability you may need to address the shared library issue.
