Hello to all Uniconers...

this issue is addressed more to Gentoo users. About a week ago, I tried to emerge unicon just to find out that there is no Unicon ebuild for Gentoo. This was rather weird since there was an Icon and a Snobol ebuild. So like a good boy, I have been trying to write it myself. I do have a version for gentoo users to test but I am not sure how the mailing list feels about attachments. So let me know on that. Currently it only works with the x86 platform. It detects X and compiles accordingly. Ultimatelly, I could use uname to get the platform type in order to make it compile on other platforms. But more one that later...

If I understand it right, Gentoo likes binaries installed in /bin so they end up in the path immediately which makes them usable instantly. So by having the ebuild do a make Install dest=/ the whole thing works. My question is how does the mailing feel about their linux file hierarchy ending up with a /ipl etc? I know people are pretty picky about their directory structure so I just want to follow protocol.

Please suggest where to put the rest of the directories that make Install creates if root just does not cut it. I am sure you are familiar but some of the directories in question are:

/ipl
/doc << this is empty on my computer so I don't have to worry about it
/man << also empty
/uni
/bin << obviously should go under /bin

Finally, do I have to do anything to unicon if I change the location of /ipl relative to /bin/unicon?

You can find a current version of the ebuild under http://www.tachtevrenidis.com

Thanks for the help in advance,

Kosta
