This is slightly off-topic, but I'm curious: does Debian encourage putting package files into the /usr hierarchy? It seems as though that would make some administration tasks more difficult. I'm used to being able to do system reinstalls by essentially wiping the disk partitions holding / and /usr [/opt and /home are elsewhere] clean and reinstalling linux.

A lot of the stuff you've done looks very interesting, but I'd
want to put them in a separate hierarchy such as /opt/uni (say)
on my RedHat system. Do you have a feel for how hard that would
be for me to do - would I have to repatch the binaries?

Thanks!
Steve

Hi Steve,
I'm far from an expert but my impression is that the "Debian way" is to put it in /opt, which is why my installations have always been in /opt, same for openoffice, firefox, thunderdbird and other non-debian things. I agree with you about ease of adminstration.
Cheers,
Jonathan
