this is weird but I might be able to help you again. I don't seem to find it on my hard drive but I would ask Clint to send you the preliminary work I did for porting unicon to use autoconf last
semester. The makefile compile switches are pretty much done.
So Clint can you forward that stuff to Barry if you still have it?

The current configuration code is a little painful on Unix/Linux/BSD/etc. Libraries like db1 (or gdbm) and Xpm could be configured automatically, and almost always will be available as shared libraries. Freetype and fontconfig also could be automatically detected and configured; also OpenGL and libiodbc. You may need different flags for gcc 3.4 than for gcc 3.3. And so on. Plus I'd like to learn autoconf stuff anyway.
So would it be worthwhile if I converted more of the Unix
configuration to autoconf/automake?
