Having readdressed the problem after writing the first message, I see it's a 
simple matter of changing   -f s    into -fs. This also solves the problem 
of -u since there must be a gratiutous interaction between the two when it 
is not specified correctly.

Sorry to have troubled you all. I don't know why I didn't try it in the 
first place...
