I've been kind of lurking here, but I would assert that we should be looking at the best translation, not a merely literal one. If a "chrestomathy" is supposed to be a comparative translation, even when it comes to natural languages, a simple literal translation just won't do. Imaging Poe or Shakespeare translated to Urdu, or Dante into English.
Example: In English, I take a walk. In Spanish, I give one. The literal translation is nonsense in both directions! A good translation has to make sense in the target language.
