If by \... you mean  \x00\x01\... try the built-in image().

The only caveat is that image knows about built-in values like &cset and give 
you a smart answer.  Try write(image(&cset--&digits--&letters)).

There's so much in the IPL that if I'm looking for something I use the permuted
