As a follow-up on the variable() function, I note that any recent change to
variable() compared with past behavior was probably introduced by Ziad Al
Sharif's Ph.D. work. Chapter 6.2 of his dissertation talks about
inter-program variable safety and a trapped-variable technique that he
implemented in order to allow the UDB debugger to modify local variables in
a target program. But there might be bugs, or he may have implemented a
workaround to variable()'s limitation that would be of interest to others.
