Agreed, this seems more of a Compiz bug. When something focuses a window that isn't on the current virtual desktop, that desktop should be switched to.
** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 1047809 Needs to set timestamps, so applications don't open in background -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Unity API bugs, which is subscribed to Messaging Menu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882277 Title: When clicking an item from the messaging menu, it doesn't changes virtual desktop Status in “compiz” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I have a virtual desktop assigned only for IM, and when I'm working on something else and someone sends me a message, the messaging menu turns blue. I then click on the messaging menu and on the name of my contact, the window is selected, but I can't see it because it is in the other virtual desktop. So I have to manually move to my IM virtual desktop or click on the Unity icon for that window to actually see the message. The messaging menu should work the same as the Unity bar to bring focus to the IM window and move to the virtual desktop where it sits.
