To discuss a new fencing project at the Squirrel Hill Community Garden
The community garden at 4713-15 Chester Avenue is one of the twenty-two gardens held in trust by the Neighborhood Gardens Association/ A Philadelphia Land Trust. The Squirrel Hill Community Association was successful in getting the former apartment buildings taken down in the 70's and having the garden title turned over to NGA in 1992 as a preserved community-managed green space.
NGA has worked with the land trust community gardeners over the years providing liability insurance for the gardens and most recently funding for physical improvements to the gardens. Last year, NGA helped the Squirrel Hill gardeners by having a water system put in for the use of the gardeners, making them more sustainable in the future. The gardeners then rebuilt the front edge with a low stone wall to replace the rotting railroad ties.
The latest improvement project is adding fencing to the Squirrel Hill garden border that will help with securing the property. At the meeting, we will explain the proposed fencing plan and answer questions and concerns neighbors may have about the project. Efforts were made to select fencing that would look as attractive as possible. Most of the fencing will be ornamental steel that will blend with the old wrought iron fences in the neighborhood.
