Delicious Labor Day Goodies at the

Lancaster Avenue Farmers Market

37th Street and Lancaster Avenue

Saturday, August 30th, 10am-2pm

Our wonderful market has a splendid selection of food and produce, certainly enough to keep you and yours supplied with delicious and nutritious food for the whole Labor Day weekend.  Meat-eaters can choose from Dan's BBQ, already cooked, or whole or parts of do-it-yourself chickens from Phil, Paul, or UNI, or steaks and ham slices from Phil.  Several farmers have potatoes for potato salad and eggs to devil; then try fresh sweet corn and relish from John, salad and tomatoes from Somerton Farm, Bob, and Paul, greens from John, Somerton, and Paul, iced tea from Paul, and bread and rolls from Dave, Benuel, or John.  Finish it off with watermelon from John, or maybe a fruit compote, with apples from Bob or Paul, peaches from Bob, and berries from John, with cookies from Dave on the side; or pies from John or Benuel.  Go for it!

Paul Hails will be back with more goat's milk and cheese, an assortment of other cheeses, potatoes, greens, onions, yellow squash, cukes, tomatoes, peppers, Ginger Gold and Paula Red apples (which are early sweet apples-tart ones come later), iced tea, free-range chickens, and pierogies. Most of Paul's produce is certified organic, and all is clearly marked.  He suggests you might want to check out his website: www.hiskidsdairy.com.

Bob Fahnestock somehow arrived last Saturday with 8' poles for a 10' tent frame, so he and his peaches had some extra sun; at least it wasn't broiling hot. Bob will be back with matching equipment to keep his Sunhigh and Loring peaches, tomatoes, Honeycrisp (and possibly Gala) apples, and basil (and his head!) cool.

Somerton Tanks Farm will be back with a new crop of white turnips, broccoli raab, tomatoes, salad mix, braising greens, arugula, carrots, mustard and other bunches of greens, and cilantro.

Benuel Stoltzfus of Dan King's Barbeque did not have pork sandwiches available last week because his stove was not working, but he will have it repaired and be back this week with those sandwiches and his very popular BBQ chicken and ribs.  Benuel plans to move his baked goods to the other side of his barbeque equipment.

Expect John King to continue to have potatoes, onions, green beans, white eggplant, tomatoes, beets, sweet corn, zucchini, all kinds of greens, cukes, red and green peppers, and blackberries, cantaloupes, watermelon, and plums.  Do remember that he also has baked goods, crackers, very, very good (as reported by neighbor Pat Davis) pretzels, pasta and other dried goods, and canned goodies from Lancaster County.

Phil Landis expects to be back this week with a great assortment of beef, pork (including sausage), ham, lamb, free-range chickens, and eggs.

Dave of Big Sky Bread had a good day last week and will be back with more good fruit and yeast breads, cookies and granola this week.

Scott and Becky Epler and some of their girls will be back on September 6th, the day of the Hamilton Street Porch Sale, with their delicious maple sugar products.
