Folks, please, use the list to share information with your neighbors, but please don't use it as a cabaret stage. The culture list is intended somewhat more for that purpose.
I receive many complaints from people who feel the list has gone from polite, albeit sometimes heated, discourse to sheer noise. Racial slurs, even if meant ironically, generate similar complaints.
I'm picking on Ross' post because it highlights nicely what I'm talking about, but he's not the only one who posts without considering whether he is furthering discourse or merely maintaining noise level. (Much of that thread I thought was noise: my opinion only.) Please, pause, think before you post. Are you asking a question or answering someone's question? Are you contributing something?

you urge people to use this list to share information, to answer people's questions, to contribute something. meanwhile I'm still waiting (with others) to hear what kind of tree it was. why have you not posted an [ADMIN] decorum message about that? think about it. the opposite of noise is not silence, it's MORE (AND EVEN MORE) NOISE.
as ross has pointed out, he was not making a racial slur, nor being ironic, nor merely making noise. and yet you (and others) thought he was. and now it's out in the open, that noisy difference of perception. for everyone to hear and decide upon for themselves.
and that, I [pause] think, is one of the beauties of this list!
