Katie,

I learned yoga initially from the Sidde Yoga Ashram on Wayne Avenue at
Lincoln Drive. They teach Hatha Yoga and after experiencing other types
such as Iyengar and Daoist yoga, I can tell you that true Hatha is the
most energizing of all, at least for my body and spirit. At the
University City Arts League, our yoga class was situated directly
beneath a dance class teaching square-dancing or Ukranian Folk Dancing
or something similar to make the rafters shake. After being at the
Ashram and practicing yoga on a thick padded rug, lovely incense and
blessed quiet, it was really frightful. What ended up being the most
practical for me because I work in center city was the Jefferson
Hospital Community Health Program. It sponsored a yoga class - the
Daoist one - taught by an excellent instructor named Deanna McLaughlin
who also taught at 12th Street Gym. She is now teaching at a place on
Walnut near 21st.

Katie,
One thing about yoga is that there are many different styles. IF you
are
taking your first yoga class, it might be difficult to decide which you
want. I have taken Iyenger from Colin Earl on Buckingham. I like him. I
took
classes over a year ago and I still find things that he taught me
useful. He
knows alot about anatomy and has a good eye for what is happening with
bodies.
