I had an incident with an outdoor cat which had a dubious vaccination history
a number of years ago. My understanding was that if the cat was living after
10 days, it wasn't rabid. The cat in my situation was still alive, and
therefore I was able to stop the series of shots.
I also believe the treatment needs to be started immediately, rather than
waiting to find out if the animal is rabid.
This indicates to me that if the cat belongs to someone who values it, they
could choose to crate it until 10 days are up, instead of killing it for
testing.
