BICYCLE REPAIR INSTRUCTOR
We are looking for a caring, organized, and outgoing person to teach bike repair and safety to 8 - 17 year old students from West Philadelphia. Applicants can expect to start in late May or early June and work at least 30 hours per week with most of the hours in the afternoon/early evening.
The sucessful applicant will:
~ have a demonstrable ability to manage groups of youths & adults
~ have experience working with youth & fixing bicycles
~ own & maintain a bicycle
~ use safe riding techniques


Duties include:
~ preparing for & teaching after school classes in bike repair & safety
~ keeping track of students' contact information & attendance
~ procuring & preparing nutritious snacks
~ contacting families about upcoming events & concerns about students
~ managing youth employees & volunteers
~ organizing & presiding over graduation ceremonies
~ attending meetings & networking with partner organizations
~ organizing & leading group rides

2004 FELS INTERNSHIP IN COMMUNITY SERVICE:
CityScape Cycling Club Facilitator
NBW seeks a graduate student to facilitate the CityScape Cycling Club, bicycle-riding club focused on exploring community history and resources, local parks, and the built environment, and geared to youth aged 10-17. Application deadline is April 15.


This work would include planning and leading rides, communicating with youth and families, working closely with NBW staff to tailor activities to students' needs, mentoring individual youth, documenting the program, compiling and analyzing statistics, and making recommendations for future programs. The intern will create a short ride manual that complements existing literature, and write a report detailing outcomes of the program with recommendations for design and execution of similar programs in the future.

This position would suit a student of Sociology, Social Work, Education, or related field who has a strong interest in working with youth and is an enthusiastic bicyclist. The ten-week position includes allocated time for working with youth and writing the required documents. This internship is supported by the Fels Foundation and includes a $6000 stipend. To qualify for this stipend, the intern MUST be a currently enrolled grad student or accepted to a graduate school starting no later than September 2004.

II. It's Summer Camp Time!
This summer, NBW is again running our Earn a Bike program as an intensive two-week day camp. Students will:
* Earn a bicycle which they have reconditioned themselves.
* Earn a helmet, lock, and basic tools.
* Learn safe and effective urban cycling skills.
* Learn job-related skills and work cooperatively with other youth.
* Gain confidence in themselves and as cyclists.
* Go on rides and field trips to the Franklin Institute, the Lehigh Valley Velodrome, and more.
* Explore bike-related arts and crafts.


Summer camp is $200 per two week session. This includes instructional staff certified by the League of Americal Bicyclists, a bike and accessories, two meals a day plus snacks, and all field trip admissions and transportation. Sibling discounts and scholarships are available. Sessions start July 6, July 19, August 2, and August 16 and are limited to twelve campers each.
