Amerik@ You Are Beautiful to Me.

Craig, take a break and read "Abu Ghraib: The Hidden Story" by Mark Danner in the current issue of The New York Review of Books (http://www.nybooks.com/). Danner has been following the Abu Ghraib torture story; his previous article on "The Logic of Torture" is must reading for every red-blooded American.

Essentially, he exposes the Administration's Nixonian strategy of "limited modified hangout" in dealing with the scandal, demonstrating that sadistic military police are not "just a few bad apples", but implements of a policy of torture set in place at the highest levels of the American government -- Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bush.

The "socially immature" Young Republican is not just one bad apple, but the quintessence of evil. He is the sort of person the contemporary Administration is trying to manufacture.

The ultimate problem for you and everyone else in our cozy UC Village is that governments which employ torture as policy tend not to be content with doing it to the brown people overseas. They are quite capable as we know of doing it to the brown people here at home, and be assured that they will do it to the white people when necessary.

"Look over the people, look over the land,
Look over the leaders with the blood on their hands,
 And open your eyes,
 And see what they do,
When they knock over there son they're knocking for you --

Just a knock on the door,
 Knock on the door.
Here they come to take one more,
 One more."
