So far the stove has been adopted to a nice home. I have several people interested in the cabinet, but no one has come by to look at it or take it.....first come first served.

Subject: [UC] Jazz night - Saturday October 23, 2004 : 9 PM -1 AM at SFDS : Plus some back story

Metrudah Teixeira asked me to post the following:

She is selling tickets to a Jazz "Caberet" featuring a fabulous trio and
a full buffet dinner with an open Bar (Wine, Beer, Sodas and bottled
waters only).

The Jazz night is this Saturday, October 23, 2004 from 9 PM -1 AM at St.
Francis.
Enter via the main stairs at 925 S. 47th, between Baltimore and
Springfield.
Or, since the hall is now wheelchair accessible, use the elevator,
located inside the smaller school yard, just north of the main stairs.

Included in the $25.00 ticket price are:
The music of Jazz Trio "FREESTYLE & SHOO BABE";
Carefully selected recordings to fill the intermissions;
Incredible, "southern" cooking, buffet style:
Baked Ham, Fried Chicken, Turkey in Gravy
White and 'Dirty' (shrimps,etc) rice, Mac & Cheese, Salads
Home baked Desserts
Open Wine, Beer and Soft Drinks Bar;
Family style seating
(gather with your friends or meet new neighbors);
Pleasure in expanding musical and neighborhood horizons;
Pride in knowing profits create scholarships for local kids.
(Last year local kids Matthew and Jasmine were awarded scholarships.)
Singles and families are welcome and expected, but....
How can you beat this cost for a "Date" night?
A diverse crowd will bring out amazing energy.

The School Hall at St. Francis de Sales is a great place to hold a
neighborhood party.
It is large, clean, stunning and can be lighted in a variety of ways,
including with a carefully preserved disco ball, mood, spot and stage
lighting.

It is easy to park at the free municipal lot, at 47th and Warrington, but
this is a neighborhood event, and it might be more fund to drink and walk
home.

You can buy tickets from Metrudah via her cell number 267-977-2389, or at
the front door.
Tickets can also be picked up at the SFDS Rectory, 4625 Springfield
Avenue, any weekday between 10 AM & 6 PM.

Now, the back story...

Metrudah is one of the fascinating neighbors who makes our neighborhood
great.
She lost her husband to Leukemia, after fighting the disease vigorously.
She was part of producing one of the most successful bone marrow donor
searches on the east coast.
She has dark skin and English is definitely not her first or even second)
language, yet she manages steady employment while raising 4 kids (one
with Downes syndrome). Her kids are student athletes, doing well at
track and basketball while managing school and helping with the youngest
child.
She gives and accepts help graciously, and is one of the first to bring
food or provide comfort in a crisis.
She uses the tools at hand, in this example me to post to this list, to
achieve constructive agendas.
Metrudah is one of the folks who inspires me in the belief that we humans
are most noble when we help others and extend ourselves beyond our
previous limits.
Metrudah is someone who could be asking for help for herself, but instead
is out organizing a party, so that we can gather and celebrate life and
have fun while doing good and raising money to help our neighborhood kids
gain the kind of scholarship money that can be used to buy books or close
other funding gaps.
She sold Larry and I on the party, and I hope to see lots of our other
neighbors there.
By the way, in addition to the organization and the ticket sales,
Metrudah will be cooking the "dirty" rice. She promises something with
African roots and creole accents. She assures me that her friends who
are making the Fried Chicken produce ambrosial results that will put the
Colonel to shame.

If you can get your ticket from Metrudah, please do so, maybe call her
(267-977-2389) and arrange for her to leave one or two at the Front door,
for COD pick up. She has a goal of selling a lot of tickets and it would
be an added bonus if this rippled into another success for her and her
service group the Knights of Peter Claver.

All the best!

Liz
