Theresa:

We have had DishNetwork (DN) for three or four years. Generally, at the
lower end of the programming option DN is cheaper than DirectTV (DTV). DTV
is known to have more sports programming. One important consideration is
that DTV offers a built-in TIVO recorder for a monthly fee of something like
$4.95 which is a great deal. I can't say enough good things about TIVO and
I would probably recommend DirectTV just because of it. (TIVO is also
available as a standalone unit that works with DN but the subscription cost
is either a one-time fee of $299 for the life of the "box" or $12.99 a
month).
