Title: Re: [UC] Mid-Atlantic AAA- Why Do They Suck So Badly?????
I had my tires slashed one night near South Street about 5 years ago in the middle of August. Fortunately, I had a place to stay nearby that night so I decided to call it a night and call AAA in the morning. I explained to them that I had my tires slashed. (Which implies that there is a hole in the tire and it will not hold air – correct?) So, 3 hours after my call, a guy with an air compressor shows up to fix my flat. No patch kit, no fix-a-flat, no nothing. I had a full-size spare but the special jack required to release the spare from the holding area in the car was long gone so he was unable to do anything for me and said he’d tell AAA to dispatch someone else now that they “knew what the problem was.” 2 hours later another guy with an air compressor and a flat bed showed up and offered to fix my flat. I showed him the hole. He shrugged and offered to tow me home or to a garage - either of which would require that I pay him has I was at 5th & South and a tow to Ucity was “out of range” for my basic membership.  He said that I could pay him cash under the table and it would be cheaper than AAA’s rates. I turned him down and called AAA again. After much screaming and my decision to completely give up on AAA and start calling local tow companies myself, a kind soul with the same model car parked behind me. He used his jack to get my tire out of the well, and had my slashed tire replaced in 5 minutes.  I swore off AAA from then on.

I have never had a good experience dealing with Mid-Atlantic AAA (i.e., AAA
that services Philadelphia).  I have always had to wait a minimum of a 1 1/2
hours for them to respond even on a non-weather adverse day in June.  After
one particularly egregious occasion, I wrote a nasty a letter and received,
in response, a mea culpa letter and a complimentary yearly membership.  I
have not carried a AAA membership for at least four years since our last two
cars came with their own road side assistance plans.  I have always found
these plan provider's response time to be much better than AAA.  I spoke to
a client who owns a towing company.  He told me that his company gives AAA
calls a lower priority than other roadside company's call because AAA's
reimbursement rates are so low.

I had a completely different experience dealing with the Northampton County
AAA.  I had driven to Easton for a court appearance.  As I got out of my
car, I noticed that the rear, driver side tire was almost flat (which
surprised me since I hadn't notice anything wrong up to that point).  I
proceeded to attend the hearing and then placed a call to AAA.  I explained
where the car was parked, and they told me they would be there shortly.
Being used to Mid-Atlantic AAA's response time, I lingered in the courthouse
(it was raining) for several minutes during which time I realized that I had
left my umbrella in the courtroom.  I walked back to the courtroom to
retrieve it and walked out of the courthouse, across the drive to the
parking garage, and up several flight of stairs to my car. (The amount of
time that transpired between the call and my arrival was no more than 10
minutes) By the time I arrived at my car, the AAA guy was already there, had
jacked up the car and was waiting for me.

Man AAA was useless today. I got up at 5 am to beat the rush
and then was forwarded to a car dealer once. Hope tomorrow is
better but I doubt it.

services extended

My hat's off to the Ambassador who jumpstarted me within 10 minutes of my
call today -- after I had been unable to get past a busy signal for three
hours at AAA! Man, was I glad to see that van pull up.
