Most of the building site is on a gravel surface parking lot now only occasionally used by the Zoo for overflow parking, not public green space. The site slopes downward steeply from Girard Avenue, and is not frequently used by anyone. The site is currently well-served by public transit, and will be even more so when the 52nd Street/City Branch Connector light rail line is built to serve the Centennial District, Parkway Institutions, Convention Center, and possibly the Delaware Riverfront. The School District will maintain portions of adjacent, actively-used parkland for use as the school's athletic fields. Public use of these School District-maintained fields will continue.

This is a case where the positives greatly outweigh the negatives.

I agree with Lauren 100 percent. It makes no sense to use valuable parkland
to build a school where there is other land available. Once it is paved
over, it is gone forever. Build it nearby and use the park for athletic
fields.

With acres of brown field sites (and plenty in Mantua) I suggest that
building that school and its associated parking lots and playing fields on
current Fairmount Park land is a very BAD use of the resources the city has
to offer the deal. Yes getting a parcel of land from them is probably
easier than getting one together within the fabric of the city -but it is
still a bad idea and sets a bad precedent. my 2cents worth - Lauren

Subject: [UC] Site for New High School

On my run this morning I passed by a major new construction project that has
started in a corner of Fairmount Park that sits right on Girard and
Parkside.
They have already felled numerous large trees and fenced off a small
shortcut I
used to cut from Lansdowne Dr. to Girard Ave. The only project I could think
of
that might be built there would be the much touted new high school I'm sure
most of us are familiar with and which is sponsored by a particular
corporate
behemoth.

Am I right in my impression that this apparent groundbreaking has been kept
consipicuously silent?

I also recall the site being described as an out of the way corner of
Fairmount
Park. Now that I know the specific site I can say that is out and out shit.
They are using prime park land for other purposes. While the merits of the
competing land uses can be debated, it should have been framed as such.

Maybe its because a corner of land that was a familiar part of my regular
routine has now been abruptly and fundamentally altered, but this beginning
feels rather ominous.
