Penn Welcomes the 14th Annual Philadelphia Film Festival | April 7-20, 2004

In celebration of the 14th annual Philadelphia Film Festival and its
programming at University City’s  Bridge Cinema DeLux and International
House, the University of Pennsylvania is offering five free events that
bring film lovers  and scholars together for lively conversation about
varied aspects of cinema such as music, business, sociology and culture.

“Film festivals are wonderful opportunities to bring together cinema from
all over the globe and, during a concentrated period of time, allow society
to get a macro view of varied artistic expression,” said Timothy Corrigan,
Director of Penn’s Cinema Studies Department. “We were inspired to organize
and host free programs to raise the level of public dialogue about cinema on
our campus.”

The Cine Cafes program includes:

“MUSIC IN FILM”
DATE & TIME: Friday April 1, 7 p.m.
LOCATION: World Café Live (3025 Walnut Street)
PROGRAM:  Buster Keaton’s film “Steamboat Bill, Jr.” with a live score by
Boister, followed by discussion. Visit www.worldcavelive.com or call

“BUSINESS of FILM”
DATE & TIME: Friday, April 8, 5-7 p.m.
LOCATION: 12 Lounge at the Bridge Cinema DeLux, (40th and Walnut Street)
PROGRAM: Presented by Penn Cinema Studies and led by professor Peter
Dechernery. The panel will feature scholars, filmmakers, and industry
professionals, including Jeffrey Berg, Chairman and CEO of International
Creative Management Inc. Mr. Berg is leading agent in the entertainment
industry with experience in both the America and international marketplace
and ICM a predominant talent and literary agency in the United State and
Europe.

“WOMEN IN FILM”
DATE & TIME: Tuesday, April 12, 5-7 p.m.
LOCATION: Living Room at the Hilton Inn at Penn, (University Square 36th and
Walnut Street)
PROGRAM: Presented by Cinema Studies, led by Karen Beckman. Filmmakers and
scholars discuss the challenges facing women entering the world of
commercial and independent filmmaking.

“HOLLYWORLD? National and International Film”
DATE & TIME: Thursday, April 14, 5-7 p.m.
LOCATION: 12 Lounge at the Bridge Cinema DeLux, (40th and Walnut Street)
PROGRAM: Presented by Cinema Studies, led by Timothy Corrigan. The panel
will discuss Hollywood’s supposed dominance of world cinema, the increasing
visibility of many other national cinema, and the relationship between these
two forces.

“FILM and our CULTURE”
DATE & TIME: Monday, April 18 5-7p.m.
LOCATION: Penn Bookstore Café, (36th and Walnut Street)
PROGRAM: presented by Kelly Writers House, led by Blake Martin. A panel
discussion and conversations with local film reviewers and writers.

In addition to these programs a variety of restaurants and local businesses
are offering dining specials for the duration of the film festival.
