Those of you who didn't make it down to the Milton Street rally to
represent West Philly missed a really good time. Seriously, it was the
most entertaining political rally I've been to in quite some time.

Mr. Street missed the 5,000 mark he'd been hoping for by ... Er, a lot.
I estimate there were probably 200 people there, maybe 40 of them were
reporters. Mr. Street is, I believe, a much more charistmatic speaker
than his brother, the Mayor, but he is also prone to flights of ...
Well, complete weirdness. About 10 minutes into his speech, he brought a
coffin out on stage, saying that he hope to end violence in the city.
And then he started preaching, really preaching, like quoting the bible
and waving his arms while the crowd shouted "AMEN!" and then, overcome
by the spirit -- he burst into song. I kid you not. And this is probably
what you'll see on the news tonight. He actually has a pretty good
singing voice. This went on for a while. Periodically he'd lean on the
coffin, close his eyes and start praying, then he'd run up front and
wave his arms around. He dealt with some hecklers, said that Bob Brady's house in New Jersey was a lot bigger than his house in New Jersey, then
he went off and sang a duet with some guy from WIP. And that was that.
Everybody seemed to get a good chuckle out of it and you could tell the
reporters were glad to be doing this rather than covering some high
school kid who's making 10,000 paper cranes for peace or something. I
heard one of them say "People should have to PAY to see this, I feel
like I just went to the theater!"

P.S. -- as you might have expected, he said that despite not having
5,000 supporters at the rally, he was going to keep on running.
