West Philly is beginning BI-WEEKLY Single-Stream Curbside Recycling
including plastic and cardboard this week, but WEST PHILLY NEEDS IT EVERY
WEEK.
People can pick up 20 gallon bins at the West Sanitition Yard at 51st
and Grays Ave (49th St becomes Greys below Woodland Ave) 215-685-2608
RecycleNOWPhiladelphia (RNP) is campaigning for a CITY-WIDE program of
WEEKLY, INCENTIVE-BASED, SINGLE-STREAM CURBSIDE RECYCLING (WIBSSCR).
You can sign the RNP petition on-line at
http://www.recyclenowphiladelphia.org/TakeAction.asp or at the Green Line
Cafe.
RecycleBank implemented a pilot program in Chestnut Hill and West Oak
Lane for over a year ago. The City saves and makes money while residents
receive incentives provided through their partnerships with local
businesses. Visit their website http://www.recyclebank.com/ and select the
orange "view demo" icon. RecycleBank provides each residence with a rolling
container and retro-fits Streets Dept compactor trash trucks with a
mehanical lift, bar-code scanner and scale. City workers roll the container
to the back of the truck. They don't have to lift nothing, and the volume
recycled by each residence is tracked for cash-value rewards for residents.
Particpation percentages are reportedly in the 90s. It works!
Tuesday night PA Horticultural Society, Philadelphia Parks Alliance and
PA Environmental Council sponsored a Mayoral Forum at the Flower Show. A
number of candidates responded to the annoyng recycling guy's question by
committed to implementing WIBSSCR when elected and directing the savings
towards parks nd education. They are getting the message: we demand a
credible recycling program that can realize the City Controllers estimate of
$20 million in yearly savings.
Councilwoman Blackwell has heard our call for improved recycling and
has delivered an upgrade to Single-Stream for her district, but we can't let
the Streets Commission buy us off with this second- (or third-) rate
program. We must continue to demand better: Call Councilwoman Jannie
Blackwell and ask her to push for WEEKLY PICKUP and the next expansion of
the RECYCLEBANK PILOT PROGRAM for West Philly and expansion of WIBSSCR
City-Wide. 215-686-3418 or 19.
Contact Deputy Steets Commisioner Williams (686-5470) and Recycling
Director Joan Hicken (686-5504) to let them know that West Philly wants it
every week NOW and RecycleBank as soon as they realize that they need to
expand it if they want to keep their jobs.
I'm not positive about their email addresses, but you can try
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED]
They're gettting the message, but they need it to be constant, loud and
unignorable.
