The prevailing sentiment seems to me "If it's not mine personally, I don't care about it. It's all the people who believe this that make me wish I was not American. This mentality creates litter, gum dried black to sidewalks, all manner of debris, torn up plants. In sum, there is a complete failure to instill any sense of ownership with people who behave in this manner. Somebody in each of their lives let them down generation to generation, preventing them from feeling a sense of belonging. Or else they take the easy way out and manipulate their situation by claiming such victimization. When I walk down the street, I am always amazed and sometimes angered by the lack of connection with all of us.
