Over 1,000 Philadelphians turned out for the recent Green City Strategy Mayoral Forum on March 5th, demonstrating overwhelming energy for parks and open space issues. Five mayoral candidates have already endorsed park governance and funding reform, and as of now four have included park reform as part of their platform. In order to seize on this excitement and momentum, the Philadelphia Parks Alliance is asking for your help, as a supporter of the NEXT GREAT CITY initiative, which includes a call for park reform.

Over the past year and a half, the Parks Alliance and other partners have been convening stakeholders to strategize around an advocacy campaign to reform the park system. We've asked you to be ready to mobilize when the time comes - and that time is now!

Our proposal is to get charter change for new governance on the November 2007 ballot. That means we need to get it approved by City Council this spring. In addition, we want to win commitments for new funding sources for all city parks - both Fairmount Park and Recreation Department parks - so the parks can be truly revitalized.
