the malcom x park web page says that a church group was indeed having an event in the park that day and had reserved the gazebo. though i also have problems with UCD helping out a church group. perhaps jannie thought "i'll just pump up the church event with some free BBQ, and then i'll go over to the church picnic and campaign. how clever!" >From the DP article: "Blackwell admitted to asking John Fenton, who was supervising the community service effort, to bring some workers to the rally, but maintained that the event was not intended to represent any one political bent."
