Wilma,

Please announce the date and time of your performance. I'll try to attend.

No. I am not saying anyone should out-sing Miriam Makeba's "Pata, Pata" in
"Khlosa", (her native tribal language as well as Nelson Mandela's).

For example, I love The Bach Brandenburg Concertos.

Shall I go out into a public square and sing Concerto No.3 in G major, BWV 1048 anyway I should wish? People may not be able to recognize the original piece after all the mixing, marketing and media. "Perhaps in two to three
years, mainstream America would believe J.S. Bach never existed.

I do not think that would happen. I still hear Bach, Schubert, Camille
Saint-Saens, Hindemith, Berg, Schoenberg, Handel.

Have you EVER heard Sam Cooke or Aretha Franklin sing the original version
of' "Change's Gonna Come"?

Then you would know the labels they were released on.

I am glad you know Miriam Makeba, even though you didn't mention her
husband; a fellow South African trumpet player.

FYI, Glenn is my friend. I respect him and I believe he would know my
serious points and my superfluous points.

When we "out-click" Bach...

What's next? Dreadlocked suburban blonde girls trying to out-click
Miriam Makeba?

(And did anyone besides me notice that in the process of denouncing
Penn's "corporate plutocracy," Glenn was effectively plugging their
wholly-owned station -- which still operates, courtesy of Penn, under
an "educational" license despite its having almost no educational
content whatsoever?)

Subject: Re: [UC] Update on Free Speech

First of all, JUST how old is this dude Mr. Riley?

How dare he sing “Change is Gonna Come”, by Sam Cooke, one of the most
important R&B songs ever, who only Sam Cooke or Aretha Franklin (Sam
Cooke’s Church member) could sing properly?

I feel more rage about that song being sung in an improper context and
used to disturb any peace because it is so poignant.

THIS song was NEVER meant for that purpose and is almost sacred because
it is so reminiscent of the Black struggle and so few people can sing
it well.

Perhaps a different song would have been more appropriate, but not this
one. Not as long as the ‘oldheads’ like me are alive.

It desecrates Sam Cooke’s memory in my opinion to be used as a ‘loud
and wrong’ disturbance under the guise of Free Speech. The context in
which that song was written and sung is so significant to the times
which Blacks were in a deep civil rights struggle.

There is truly a synapse short circuit between Mr. Riley’s generation
and mine I suppose. I would rather him sing “The Banana Boat Song” by
Harry Belafonte than this one.

I imagine most have seen the coverage in several of the local papers
over the free speech crisis in Philadelphia and the arrest of Anthony
in Rittenhouse Square for singing a Sam Cooke song.

Mr. Riley and Torres were on WXPN this morning. They will be performing
at the upcoming XPN festival. Mr Riley was recently acquitted of all
charges and he described briefly his 18 hours in detention.

For those of us interested in marketing the Penn city’s "its better if
you sleep over" campaign, you’ll be happy that we are known as a hot
spot in the corporate war against free speech.

Apparently in the last week, the news has gone national with an
interview on NPR and the Rolling Stone magazine. I hope the free world
picks up the news too.

I guess with the acquittal; this is a time when those in favor of
restoring democratic principals can shout loudly, "power to the people"
And those who champion a corporate plutocracy and the end of free
speech for little people, can shout out about the Penn corporate
marketing success, "power to the assholes."

I wonder if this event has cost the city tax payers a million dollars
or more. What an embarrassment for a police force and city with such a
homicide rate?
