All: None of these changes made on the UC list in the last year alter the fact that I have received about 13,000 e-mails from this listserve over the last 15 months, or roughly 28 emails per day. This is why I haven't checked the list in 15 months until Bruce's e-mail to PFSNI, and probably won't expect to read responses to this e-mail (send them to [EMAIL PROTECTED]).
Honestly, when I first joined this community list four years ago I was shocked by the willingness of everyone to just email every little thought to the list. There is no way that the community is served by this list, because so many people refuse to join it. Thus, only a portion of the community is served. After all, am I not part of the community? Just because this list is democratic does not mean it is representative of the community. I certainly encourage the people who like receiving 28 e-mails per day, or alternatel a REALLY long digest email, to do keep doing so. But I whole-heartedly welcome the new list and hope that people either join it or join whatever comes out of the discussions being coordinated. There is no reason to start other list to serve the same people, which is why many of us in the past have not “diluted” the subscriber base and have yet another Listserv to subscribe to. Three significant changes happened in our local list history over the past ten years. UC-Announce was created to allow announcements only. Jeff made it possible to search and read the list in digest form. Ross Bender created “Culture” for those who like to write long e-mails and stories. The problems on the UC-List are: 1. More and more users are writing post which are unrelated to community affairs and are simply too long. 2. Too many nasty spirited post. 3. Posters who just refuse to self-police what has already been established. There are established rules and guidelines for the UC-Listserv, Jeff post FAQ’s a while back, few people have read them apparently due to the amount of people who don’t understand how to use the listserv, subscribe or unsubscribe from the listserv. PFSNI is a Penn Community listserv and has always been focused more on Penn Related information and local faculty and staff conversation. The PFSNI organization allowed a few non-Penn neighbors to subscribe. It would not make sense to migrate to PFSNI and confuse the content there. Phillyblog is available for people who like to blog, it has a west philly/u-city representation already. I think people just need to self-police, be considerate, and use the guidelines already established.. …and when you want to rant…as they say…”take it to culture!”. I propose we meet in person to discuss one (or more) of five options: *Develop rules and guidelines (and allow moderation) *Migrate to psfni *start an alternate group *Move to a BB like Phillyblog *leave things as they are ____________________________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! oneSearch: Finally, mobile search that gives answers, not web links. http://mobile.yahoo.com/mobileweb/onesearch?refer=1ONXIC
