Thank you Fran.
My sister also stayed there briefly. Sadly, she was asked to leave, because
her illness led to behaviors that were beyond the tolerances of the owners for
their staff and our neighborhood. My sister and our family were treated
professionally and respectfully, even as we were being shown the door.
Destroying the reputation of a good family, especially for profit, is vicious
and ugly. It is hurtful to all.
The mentally ill can pose enormous care challenges. We must find a balance
that replaces prejudice with care and mindfulness. We must be aware of
density. Studies show that huge group homes and shelters provide fewer
paradigms for health or acceptable behavior. Further the best balance of cost
per patient and care outcome seems to occur at about 38 people (including
children).

We must be very careful of those who need to justify their current failures or
future plans via attack upon the reputations of their predecessors or
opponents.
Sometimes a bad idea is just a bad idea.
When I pointed out the risks of building an 11 story building with zero lot
lines in a 3 story neighborhood, i was called "chicken little". Sadly, since
my post, and in just a couple months, there have been 3 crane accidents in NY
and FL that have resulted in 11(?) deaths. I think the highest of the cranes
was sitting on a 15th floor.
When others pointed out that a Hotel couldn't succeed at 33rd and Civic Center
Boulevard, and was converted to a offices, we were told the proposed company
was more savvy than the old, and very major, hotelier. And we've been told to
ignore the spectre of 'unintended' conversion, to any of dorms, or offices, or
condos, or shelter, or MHMR housing, when the rent seeking requires more profit
or a steadier, (university or government subsidized), income if the new hotel
doesn't fly.
Thanks for your reminder to be more mindful of our choices, in both word and
deed. I know I need a lot of improvement in this area and your note will help
me on a better path.
Best!
Liz

Hi, I just want to mention that when the personal care facility at 40th &
Pine was run by the Thoroughgood family, it was very nice. Several decades
ago, my aunt lived there for years and we were friendly with members of the
Thoroughgood family. Obviously, we visited with her very often and saw that
her room was always neat and clean and life there seemed to be as pleasant as
possible. It pains me to see their name associated with whatever abuses took
place when other owners later ran it. Fran In a message dated

revealing article about the former owners of the personal care
facility that used to be at 40th & Pine, and their history of neglect at
other facilities as well.
