We have ceiling fans in nearly every room. Couldn't live w/o them! Fans are made to run in both directions, for good reason. Here's a fairly comprehensive explanation of how they (should) work:

Remember that when (if) you leave your house/apt for a period of time your pet(s) are still at home and generally aren't comfortable in the heat. Make sure to make things as comfortable for them as possible, and leave extra bowls of fresh water throughout your living space. While leaving a ceiling fan on is a good idea, leaving window fans running is probably not safe. And don't leave windows open unless the screens are built in and are VERY secure!

It sounds goofy and obvious, but make sure your ceiling fans are rotating the right way if you switched them for the winter. Clean the blades, too!
