I wonder if having a strong republic, where the citizens believe in democratic principles and institutions, is the key to lower caging of citizens and crime? I really don't think more guns is the answer.

I mentioned "developed countries" with lower crime. But I've been in many poorer democracies where I felt much safer than here.

I was in the land of the Ashanti people in Ghana (Kumasi) during the elections of 2004. (Ghana was the country which eliminated the homeland from the World Cup football) The people were very committed to democracy and thankful to live in a functioning republic based on democratic principles. These lovely people are very poor by American consumer standards. I didn't see guns or crime and I was very safe. Something to consider...
