Marty Cabry called to tell me volunteers are needed to wrap gifts for the
Homeless children of our city. Please help on Saturday 12/18, for any amount of
time between 9 AM & 5 PM, in Room 401 at City Hall. I can not attend the
wrapping, but will donate about 5 hours of time, my talent(?), and the
materials needed to paint faces at the party, which will take place on Monday
evening at the Convention Center. This year, there are enough volunteers for
the party, but wrapping is still a big need. I feel enormous pride that it is
our Councilperson who addresses some of the needs of our most helpless
citizens. The Councilwoman and her staff put this party together from the
contributions of many, and subsidizes it with her own funds.
They work over the weekend and stay late on Monday. I have painted faces at
her Christmas Parties for several years and have come to understand that most
of the homeless kids are born into households afflicted by illness, sometimes
physical, often mental. They are innocents. For some the sit down dinner
might be a rare example of healthy and civilized eating. The kids show their
joy at the simple contributions of Balloons, Temporary Tattoos, Face Painting
and photos with Santa and his elves. The gifts (and the fact that they are
wrapped) are the high points of the event. Some of the parents are able to
communicate their gratitude for the party, done in ways that strengthen family
bonds and respects the guests. All are treated to a good time. Sometimes I feel
overwhelmed by the tragedy of so many children being raised without the
stability of a private home. But always I know that I did something, no matter
how small or temporary, in tandem with others, to bring joy and possibilities
to youngsters who benefit now, and through memories of a good time, into the
future. Last year, several neighbors volunteered, and I hope many can help
again, or for the first time, this year. This is the type of event that you can
bring a well behaved teen as an extra pair of wrapping hands. I know many are
already committed to other good deeds, but all available helpers are welcome.
No need to RSVP, although I love hearing the experiences of my neighbors who do
good deeds, just show up for any amount of time. Thanks for your kind
attention to this need.
Please pardon duplicates. Merry Christmas to all and to all a wonderful New
Year! Liz Elizabeth Campion
