Subject: University City Crime Alert
You are receiving this email because you signed up to receive crime updates
from UCD.
Please be aware that there has been a substantial increase in residential
burglaries this month.
Recent University City residential burglaries have included many non-forced
entries through open windows or unlocked doors. These crimes of opportunity can
be avoided. Use extra caution and please consider the following:
MAINTAIN A "LIVED IN" APPEARANCE. Turn on house and porch lights. Use light
switched timers to realistically simulate occupancy when out of town. Have
lawns mowed, sidewalks swept, hedges clipped on schedule.
LOCK UP. Lock all exterior doors and windows securely, especially basement and
first floor windows. If you are worried about someone picking or forcing the
lock - which is generally easy to do - use more secure locks including those
considered pick-resistant.
NOTIFY. Ask a trusted neighbor to watch your property when you are away. Do the
same for them. Arrange to have a neighbor pick up or the post office hold your
mail, circulars and newspapers when you are on vacation.
When installing air conditioners, make sure they are securely placed in
windows. There were a number of robberies this week facilitated by unsecure
window units.
