Thanks for the pointer. The problem happens quite frequently under VirtualBox. It's running on a WinXP host w/ a nvidia chipset underneath, though the x.org driver is the virtualbox driver. Thankfully when xorg crashes now everything just keeps working and you hardly notice other than the popup telling you that it crashed.
