At least for me, the recent wave of updates solved the problem.
Everything is back to normal, this bugreport can be closed.

** Changed in: alsamixergui (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Fix Released

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: alsamixergui

  Since the update from 9.04 to 9.10 I'm unable to play FullHD Videos.

- Under 9.04 I could play them without a hassle, the cpu (2x3,3 Ghz) didn't
even get to >50% load.
- Now any player with any output method shows me about 1 to 2 frames per
second, while the cpu still doesn't get any more load then in 9.04.

  I also don't want to bypass this by waiting for video hardware
  acceleration support, since it used to work flawlessly just before the
  update.
