I am trying to find out why the msg says no space left on device since
there are several GB of free space. The system has about 2GB free space
and persistent has 1 GB free.

I am going to reformat the USB stick to give 8 GB to Ubuntu 8.10 and of
this take 4GB for the persistent file system. This would give 4GB for
the system and 4GB for persistent info.
