I have fixed these issues by upgrading to Jaunty and then following this guide (intel specific): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582
There were so many problems with Jaunty before I followed the guide that I can not say whether this particular bug was fixed by upgrading or by following the guide (or both).
