A quite late answer, sorry.
1. I've used MCC to format the 200Gb using ext3 in readiness to reload
my music onto it, and I've mounted it by selecting /usr. Don't know
whether that's right or whether I should have selected something else
from the drop down menu, but it seems to have copied quite a lot of
folders over to it. I only want it to have music on it and nothing
else.
Never, ever, mount a data disk for /usr. Basically, /usr is where most
of your system lives (libraries, binaries, etc.). I guess a good analogy
for the windows world would be C:\WINDOWS\ or something similar (I've
not used windows for two years, so I don't remember a lot). For your
data disk, you can choose freely the name. I use /media for instance.
2. When I try and create a new folder on the 200Gb it denies me. So I
changed my user account via MCC to have root privledges but it still
won't have it. Any ideas?
No, that's strange. What do you mean by root privileges in MCC?
Anyway, you have to move /usr somewhere else, on your main disk for
instance, but it's going to be quite difficult without linux knowledge.
By the way, did you try to mount your disk as /usr after installing Mdk?
The first thing you should do is to try to change the mount point and
gain access to the disk in the new mount point. As root you should be
able to create a directory in the disk (for instance /media/music) and
make a regular user the owner of the directory.
