Steve, No, I don't know the rootcause, but I can assure you that you were not alone. I'm also running SuSE, downloaded the 6.1 rpm and installed it freshly, couldn't get it to run from /etc/init.d, so started it manual under the user slimserver.
As I was first looking into some other problems with my pronto remote and iTunes, I downloaded the 6.2 beta from yesterday and got my pronto working, but not the iTunes playlists. I gave up on that one, went to the forum, saw your post and tried the start script again. This time it worked, just as it did for you.
