I recently bought an 250GB Iomega external USB Hard drive to use for
backups on my Linux box.

The drive came already formatted FAT32 for the whole drive. Part of
the Utilities disk was a utility to run under Windows (Iomega FAT32
Formatter.exe). This works fine under 2000/XP - which can not format
large FAT32 partions on their own. Partition Magic also works fine for
large FAT32 partitions, but the version I have doesnt do USB disks...I
beleive the latest version does though.

For me FAT32 is the best solution for removable storage - you can plug
it into both Windows and Linux boxes without issue (don't know about
Macs tho...)
