Thanks for helping out. 

The /tmp/slimserver.log said something about directories not being
writable, which I think means that you were right. I tried to start
from scratch, i.e.
rpm -e slimserver
and then did a:
find / -name 'slimserver*'
to see if there were leftovers. I removed slimserver directory in
/usr/local. 

I reinstalled and then rebooted and checked the status:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/slimserver status

Which said that some pid was running. Hurray!!!

After giving it the path to my music, it rescanned, but found only 700
or so songs (there are about 6000). I did a "find new or changed songs"
(you know the one), but didn't have time to see the result. Will let you
know tomorrow. 

Btw, all my music files and dir's are owned by root:root. Is that a
problem?
