Thanks - sudo /etc/init.d/slimserver stop works perfectly.

In Xandros the script is in /etc/init.d/, though there's also a file
that links to init.d in /etc/rc0.d/ (not sure what the point of that
is...)  

The only reason I wanted to shut down Slimserver was to try and follow
the directions for getting Slimserver to use an existing MySQL
database.

Now that I've finally got Slimserver stopped, I'm trying to follow the
MySQL logon instructions from
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?ExistingMySQLInstance

I'm running into a little confusion storm, but I'll let you know how it
works out tomorrow...
