hi,

i searched the fora, read the wikis, etc., but i don't see any updated
info about installing / running slimserver on a Linkstation Live.
there's a whole thread somewhere on the subject, but it deals with the
LS or LS2, which are PPC or MIPS based. my LS Live has a Marvell cpu
(arm11 i think). there are some posts about installing on an LS Pro,
but no detailed instructions.

i haven't tried installing slimserver on the LS Live box yet, but i
will soon. what i gathered from poking around are the following:

- the linkstation os is a customized variant of linux, with no shell
access out of the box.
- shell access (i.e., root login, telnet, ftp, etc.) can be enabled by
flashing with openlink or freelink.
- freelink (debian) enables easy installation of slimserver and other
stuff using apt-get; HOWEVER it replaces the installed os and loses
some (if not all) of the functionality that came with it.
- openlink augments the installed os to allow shell access, but does
not disturb the rest of the installed os features. But, it is NOT a
debian package, so does not have apt-get.
- openlink with ipkg provides capability similar to freelink with
apt-get (i think???).

so, my questions:

- does openlink with ipkg actually work? i'd rather not do the full
freelink brain transplant, as i paid good $$ for the goodies that come
with the LS Live.
- is anybody working on a howto for the LS Live???
- is there a howto for the LS Pro (arm9 cpu), and would it work on the
LS Live?

Thanks for reading...
