I once thought I understood extended and primary partitions, but probably didn't even then.
At any rate, the four partitions were made by Linux installers. (and please understand I am NOOB) I installed PCLinuxOS, and made a partition for swap and a partition for the OS, then installed Ubuntu with a swap and a partition for the OS, which gave me the 4 primary. I would have no idea now how to make an extended and not affect what I have for Linux.
