I had the same problem installing Slimserver 6.5.4 on my Mac Mini
running Debian (lenny/sid) so I made up a .deb package for 6.5.4 long
with all of the required Perl packages that are not available in
lenny/sid already.
Add this line to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://www.menalto.com/debian unstable main
--------------------
Then either choose 6.5.4-1 in aptitude, or do "aptitude install
slimserver/unstable" and you should get the latest version, along with
the perl modules. YMMV. I offer up no support, but I imagine that
I'll be adding newer versions of this as I get around to updating my
own setup. Good luck!
