I built my own home NAS (3TB with hardware RAID controller) and built it on a Dell Server platform with a quad core Zeon. There is another free slot for another processor which I may fill one of these days. OS is 64-Bit Ubuntu server and it re-scans my music collection like a bullet :)
I run my Perforce SCM server on this system and manage my other media, so it's was worthwhile building my own. All the commercial home NAS devices on the market are underpowered crap (I work for the company that invented NAS). This NAS achieves RAID 5 writes of 90MB/s, even from Vista. The best commercial home NAS on the market, the Thecus, gets about 20MB/s on a good day!
