Firefox won't run without a GUI, so it won't run over SSH or from the command-line (without X running).
You may have encountered the infamous AppArmor problem, search the forum. It sounds like you installed Ubuntu Server, which is probably what you want. It frees up resources used by the GUI, and if you're familiar with the command line you don't really need the GUI.
