This a bit of a general question, but the Squeezecenter specific part is
this: Could Squeezecenter/Music IP interfere with a SMB share of the
library folder?

I built a Ubuntu server which has a Samba share of my media directory.
I only have trouble browsing the Music subfolder on the media share.
When I browse it, it's completely emtpy from time to time, even though
Squeeze Center is running so obviously the files are still there.

Bonus question: I'm not really concerned about file security, more
about network security. Does it make sense to chown/chgrp to nobody
nogroup? I'm trying to resolve an access denied error with the find art
plugin and I'm really just interested in removing any obstacles to other
applications.

TIA
