I've managed to get to the bottom of this problem!

The issue was related to the GD module, but unlike the other threads
I've come across where this module wasn't available, it was there but
was just failing to load.

The reason it was failing to load is that it could not load
libfreetype.so.6 - installing this (apt-get install libfreetype6) seems
to have fixed things and my Squeezecenter is now starting up :-)

I was able to reach the above conclusion by starting up Squeezecenter
in the following way:

1) su - squeezecenter
2) /usr/sbin/squeezecenter-server --debug d_startup --diag --verbose

This produced a lot of useful stdout and stderr.

Hope that helps others.
