When I was using my LinkStation HG (which is the exact same hardware as the Kuro HG) up until a few months ago I installed using the tarball. After unpacking the tarball you'll need to run build-perl-modules.pl, and also apply a patch to the Encode::Detect module. A search on these forums will turn up the links, but if you can't find it I'll check back later and point you to the exact thread.
